The Transcription Factor Lyl-1 Regulates Lymphoid Specification and the Maintenance of Early T Lineage Progenitors
Lyl-1, a transcription factor that regulates hematopoietic progenitors, is expressed in thymocyte progenitors until T cell commitment. Researchers demonstrated a requirement for Lyl-1 in lymphoid specification and the maintenance of early T lineage progenitors. [Nat Immunol] Abstract | Press Release

Ultraviolet Radiation Damages Self Noncoding RNA and Is Detected by Toll-Like Receptor 3
Researchers showed that RNA is released from keratinocytes after ultraviolet B exposure and that this stimulates production of the inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin-6 from nonirradiated keratinocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. [Nat Med] Abstract | Press Release

Robust Tumor Immunity to Melanoma Mediated by Interleukin-9-Producing T Cells
Researchers determined that T cells from mice deficient in the T helper type 17 pathway genes encoding retinoid-related orphan receptor γ and IL-23 receptor produced abundant IL-9, and found substantial growth inhibition of B16F10 melanoma in these mice. [Nat Med] Abstract | Press Release

A Specific Role for TLR1 in Protective TH17 Immunity during Mucosal Infection
Results reveal that the route of infection is central in determining which pathways provide protective immunity. They also demonstrate that toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) has dual immune functions in the gut and identify TLR1 as a critical innate receptor for protective intestinal TH17 immunity. [J Exp Med]

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and Regulatory B Cells Share IL-10 Competence and Immunosuppressive Function
Researchers found that malignant IL-10-competent chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells exhibit regulatory functions comparable to normal regulatory B cells that are competent to produce interleukin (IL)-10 that may contribute to the immunosuppression observed in patients and TCL1-transgenic mice. [Leukemia] Abstract

Cytotoxic Mechanisms Employed by Mouse T Cells to Destroy Pancreatic β-Cells
Researchers used the transfer of genetically modified diabetogenic T cells into normal, mutant, and bone marrow chimeric recipients to test the contribution of major cytotoxic mechanisms in β-cell death. [Diabetes] Abstract

Altered Phenotype of Peripheral Blood Dendritic Cells in Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes
Investigators aimed to characterize the less well-known phenotypic properties of dendritic cells in type 1 diabetes. [Diabetes Care] Abstract

Innate Immune Induction and Influenza Protection Elicited by a Response-Selective Agonist of Human C5a
Researchers found that human C5a insufflation results in the rapid induction of pulmonary cytokines and chemokines. This is followed by an influx of innate immune effector cells, including neutrophils, NK cells, and dendritic cells. [PLoS OneFull Article | Press Release

Role of Gamma-Delta T Cells in Host Response Against Staphylococcus Aureus-Induced Pneumonia
The authors concluded that accumulation of gammadelta T cells in the lungs in response to S. aureus infection is beneficial for bacteria clearance and also contributes to the tissue damage. These cells were the primary source of IL-17, which might influence the recruitment of neutrophils at the early stage of infection. [BMC Immunol] Abstract | Full Article
