Non-Canonical Inflammasome Activation Targets Caspase-11
Here researchers show, with C57BL/6 Casp11 gene-targeted mice, that caspase-11 (also known as caspase-4) is critical for caspase-1 activation and interleukin-1β production in macrophages infected with Escherichia coli, Citrobacter rodentium or Vibrio cholerae. [Nature] Abstract

The Antibacterial Lectin RegIIIγ Promotes the Spatial Segregation of Microbiota and Host in the Intestine
The findings reveal that RegIIIγ is a fundamental immune mechanism that promotes host-bacterial mutualism by regulating the spatial relationships between microbiota and host. [Science] Abstract | Press Release

Intestinal Microbiota Promote Enteric Virus Replication and Systemic Pathogenesis
Researchers found that poliovirus binds lipopolysaccharide, and exposure of poliovirus to bacteria enhanced host cell association and infection. [Science] Abstract | Press Release

Transcription Factor c-Maf Mediates the TGF-β-Dependent Suppression of IL-22 Production in TH17 Cells
Here researchers identify the transcription factor c-Maf, which is induced by transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), as a downstream repressor of Il22. [Nat Immunol] Abstract

Differential Expression of Ly6C and T-bet Distinguish Effector and Memory T Helper 1 CD4+ Cell Properties During Viral Infection
This study provides a framework for memory CD4+ T cell development after acute viral infection. [Immunity] Abstract

Functional and Epigenetic Studies Reveal Multistep Differentiation and Plasticity of In Vitro-Generated and In Vivo-Derived Follicular T Helper Cells
Investigators describe the in vitro differentiation of functionally competent follicular T helper (Tfh)-like cells that expressed interleukin-21, Tfh cell markers, and Bcl6 and rescued germinal center formation in SLAM-associated protein-deficient hosts better than other T helper cells. [Immunity] Abstract

Notch2 Receptor Signaling Controls Functional Differentiation of Dendritic Cells in the Spleen and Intestine
Researchers report that dendritic cell (DC)-specific deletion of the Notch2 receptor caused a reduction of DC populations in the spleen. [Immunity] Abstract

Opposing Signals from the Bcl6 Transcription Factor and the Interleukin-2 Receptor Generate T Helper 1 Central and Effector Memory Cells
Researchers tracked endogenous Listeria monocytogenes-specific CD4+ T cells to determine how these memory cells are formed. [Immunity] Abstract

Langerhans Cells Are Precommitted to Immune Tolerance Induction
Here, researchers tested whether epidermal Langerhans cells can support immunogenic responses in vivo in the absence of antigen presentation by other dendritic cell subsets. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract | Press Release

Epithelial Nuclear Factor-κB Signaling Promotes Lung Carcinogenesis via Recruitment of Regulatory T Lymphocytes
To investigate whether nuclear factor-κB provides an interface between persistent lung inflammation and carcinogenesis, researchers utilized tetracycline-inducible transgenic mice expressing constitutively active IκB kinase β in airway epithelium. [Oncogene] Abstract

Depleting Regulatory T Cells with Arginine-Rich, Cell-Penetrating, Peptide-Conjugated Morpholino Oligomer Targeting FOXP3 Inhibits Regulatory T-Cell Function
Investigators hypothesized that targeting FOXP3 expression with a novel arginine-rich, cell-penetrating, peptide-conjugated phosphorodiamidate morpholino based antisense would eliminate CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells and enhance the induction of effector T-cell responses. [Cancer Gene Ther] Abstract

Baxter Presents Phase III HyQ Efficacy and Tolerability Data at American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Meeting
Baxter International Inc. announced the presentation of its phase III study data for HyQ, an investigational combination immunoglobulin product for use in patients with primary immunodeficiencies. [Press release from Baxter International Inc. discussing research presented at  the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Annual Meeting, Boston] Press Release

ImmunoGen, Inc. Earns Milestone with Start of SAR3419 Phase II Testing: Event Triggers $3 Million Payment from Sanofi
ImmunoGen, Inc. announced that SAR3419 has started Phase II testing. This event triggers a $3 million milestone payment to ImmunoGen. [ImmunoGen, Inc.] Press Release

Collaborative Partnership Pioneers Model to Improve Clinical Success of Cancer Immunotherapies
The Cancer Immunotherapy Consortium of the Cancer Research Institute and the Association for Cancer Immunotherapy have issued a joint white paper outlining a comprehensive roadmap that promises to help improve and facilitate the path forward in the development of novel immunotherapies for cancer. [Cancer Research Institute] Press Release
